The U43 telephone was officially selected in 1943 following a competition launched by the administration to replace the first generation of PTT sets, the PTT 24. This competition was won by the company Ericsson Colombes, the French subsidiary of Laars Magnus Swedish Ericsson.

This rotary dial model is the one that has contributed the most to the democratization of the telephone in France; it was manufactured for almost 20 years and systematically installed at subscribers.

​

This terminal aims to be universal, compatible with the most common types of networks, automatic or manual with central battery. Its manufacturing cost must be low in order to meet high demand. Due to the shortage of metals in this time of war, it must be designed from the most available materials. The devices are therefore made of Bakelite and the components become generics.

​

Despite the arrival twenty years later of its successor, the S 63 keypad set, the U 43 was still offered by France Télécom in the 1980s.
